ARTIST TALK: Saturday, May 23, 2015 @ 4-7pm

Gallery H is proud to present Ben Zask, a Palos Verdes artist who converts found objects into original pieces of art. Curated by Gloria Placencia, the exhibit is Zask’s first solo show and includes over 30 three-dimensional unique works created by the artist during a five-year period.

Zask begins with an object to which he is emotionally attracted and that cannot stand on its own. He handles and works with the item, finding other objects that match up physically and visually. He contrasts elements: rough with smooth; organic with geometric; and as the piece builds, the story builds. Objects that he uses range from those of the pre-plastic era of the early 20th century to wood and metal objects that have gone brown or green with age.

As Zask’s artwork takes shape, it starts to tell a story that may be interpreted in many different ways depending on a person’s life experiences. He likes to say about his finished work: “I stop working on my art when I have an emotional connection to it that is similar to meeting a long-lost friend.”
