Sophia Louisa Projects is presenting a new interactive approach to fine art in Los Angeles with a blend of cutting edge artists with must see events within the gallery space. For the launch, GraceBeautyFortitude brings together for the first time three prominent Los Angeles based artists, Rebecca Niederlander, Leigh Salgado and Coleen Sterritt.
Curator Sophia Louisa Lee defines the elements of grace, beauty, and fortitude through these artists’ unique contemporary works of sculptural art. Each artist’s individual work is strikingly beautiful and strong. Together they become an enlightening experience.
Rebecca Niederlander, a recipient of the ARC Grant from the Durfee Foundation, exhibits work from her Family Tree series. These are hovering, animated hanging works made from plastic insulated copper electrical wire that create a space filled with energy and determination. In these pieces, all elements are connected, with each aspect modulated by the subtle movement of the whole.
Leigh Salgado, a leading proponent of sculpted drawing, exquisitely transforms archival paper with Exacto knives to eviscerate the negative space between the lines in her ink drawings, while texture and shadows reinforce a physical experience. Her delicate objects exude sensuality as well as a quiet strength.
Coleen Sterritt, represented by d.e.n. contemporary, is a professor of sculpture, and has been recognized by the Museum of Contemporary Art Los Angeles by being part of its permanent collection. Her commanding works emanate a grounding, powerful force while maintaining a gentle grace.
