Contradictions abound in these paintings, which simultaneously contain both impulsivity and structure. This theme is continued in the narration of her figures as they are torn between the comfort of blending in and the desire to stand out.

Rachel examines the extremes of relationships – the way friendship and love can coexist in the struggle for power. This struggle is prevalent everywhere you look: between the men, the women, and within ourselves. The closer you examine these lovely paintings the more you want to be with them.

Rachel Warkentin has a fresh and engaging style that will make her an artist of note. This is her first solo show since graduating from Claremont Graduate University this summer; we will be seeing more of Rachel’s work in the future.

The Long Beach Redevelopment Agency is proud to partner with Phantom Galleries LA, not only to revive empty storefronts along our major corridors, but also to showcase the arts and build a sense of community and culture in our Downtown," said Craig Beck, Executive Director of the Long Beach Redevelopment Agency.
