Artist Statement
In this series of Gummi Bear sculptures, I explored the relationship between
food consumption and class. The bright colors and soft texture of children's snacks construct a romantic scenario which draws my attention to the dangerous ingredient behind them. By rearranging the embellished snacks in the forms of luxury commodity, I wish to pose the questions: Who consume these foods? Who has the choice to choose?
YaYa Biography
Born and raised in Taiwan, YaYa Chou moved to Los Angeles in 1997 to study Experimental Animation. Being inspired by scene and set design for clay animation, the awards-winning filmmaker turned her interests to sculpture and installation. Without formal trainings in visual art, Chou remains a self-taught mixed-media artist as of today.
YaYa Chou’s works combine humor and commentary on modern lifestyles; they are inspired by language, social phenomenon and melody, stemmed from consumption, theory, and words. Mostly she investigates the assumption of what is natural and what is unnatural.
Chou’s films were screened in numerous international film festivals and venues, including Museum of Modern Art, New York. She is currently showing with galleries and in juried shows in Los Angeles, Minneapolis, U.K. and Taipei, Taiwan. Her works are featured in Fiberarts magazine, books and newspapers in the U.S. and Taiwan.
