ART To GO
Art to Go was born in 1991 as Art While You Wait, a project of the Los Angeles Cacophony Society. Its intent was to tweak the nose of the prestigious (pretentious?) L.A. DADA group exhibition at a huge downtown L.A. warehouse and was set up right at the entrance to the heavily hyped and attended show. The concept was simple: Provide the “customer” with a menu allowing him or her to order a custom work of art. They could select the style, subject, and even medium to be used on the little, 1 foot square of masonite “canvas”. The salesman would deliver the completed menu to one member of the art team that was standing by, who would then render the customer’s desires within the space of an hour. The cost for this personally commissioned masterpiece? A mere Five U.S. dollars. As predicted, they raised the ire of a few of the artists showing within, who were trying to hawk works of dubious value for amounts in excess of $5,000. Most, however, got the joke and laughed along with them, as well as dozens of happy customers, some of whom ended up quite surprised at the quality of the work they ended up with.
After 15 years of appearances at various art festivals, gallery openings and special events such as the Blessing of the Cars they are still at it, and have been invited to display a small, but representative sample of their voluminous body of work. However, to experience the full, aesthetic effect of their process, they invite you to come place an order on Saturday, October 14th during the Pasadena Artwalk. They will be cranking it out from 11 AM until 6 PM at the parking lot entrance to this gallery.
And remember: When you order your painting from Art to Go, you can have it your way, because special orders don’t upset us!
Some of these pieces are available for purchase. To see more or contact them, visit http://www.myspace.com/art2go or just visit them here at the Artwalk.
