Downtown L.A. Cuban Art Exhibition
November 9th and 11th
underfidel.com, in collaboration with Phantom Galleries Los Angeles, presents a diverse collection of original artwork by four prominent Cuban artists: Salvador González, Eduardo González Expósito, Alfredo Manzo Cedeño, and Luis Lamothe Duribe. The collection features pop-inspired signed prints and oil paintings, Afro-Cuban religious imagery, painstakingly detailed hand-pressed linoleum prints, and original ink on paper drawings, all of which collectively provide an ironic, introspective, spiritual and descriptive window into the reality and imagination of Cuba and its artists.
The collection will be available for public viewing on Thursday, November 9th and Saturday, November 11th, 2006, from 5:00 to 10:00 p.m. in Downtown Los Angeles - 121 E. 6th St., Los Angeles, CA 90014 at the Santa Fe Lofts (corner of 6th St. and Main St.)
Brief Artist Bios:
Salvador González is a muralist, sculptor, and painter, who is best known for his masterwork el Callejón de Hamel, or Hamel’s Alley, located in in Central La Habana, Cuba. El Callejón de Hamel is a multidimensional outdoor art space. It is considered to be a temple to the Afro-Cuban religious cultures where Salvador serves as a priest of Shango.
Eduardo González Expósito, Expósito, is a professional actor and artist. Exposito uses the simplicity of his work to create an impression in the viewer that ultimately results in an intimate and intense connection with the image. Expósito’s silent and figuratively altered visages re-imagine basic shape and form, while maintaining vital expression.
Alfredo Manzo Cedeño was born in La Habana, Cuba. His artistic training took place at the Academia de Bellas Artes “San Alejandro” and the Facultad de Educación Artística de Instituto Superior Pedagógico Enrique José Varona. The works available are part of a series that pay tribute to Andy Warhol’s contribution to Pop art. Even though Manzo’s work has also been labeled as Pop art, he prefers to refer to is as “Populista” because of its reference to both Cuban and American culture and heritage.
Luis Lamothe Duribe was born in La Habana, Cuba and is a self-taught artist, painter, sketcher/drawer, and engraver who also has experience with wood sculpture. He was also an illustrator for the Gaceta de Cuba, Revista Unión and Revista Revolución y Cultura. Some of the prints available consist of images of his homeland that have been carved in used, black-and-white linoleum and then printed on a small handpress.
