Ongoing Open Call to Artists and Curators.

We are currently interested in proposals for our Long Beach and Pasadena locations.

Proposals for Art in Windows Installations in Greater Los Angeles — Phantom Galleries LA

Phantom Galleries LA places temporary art installations in vacant storefront windows throughout Los Angeles County. This is an open-ended call for proposals. There is no entry fee.

To allow for various types of work, we have engaged various curators, both independent ones and those from established Galleries, arts organizations, and educational institutions. You can submit whatever you can think up that would be appropriate for public windows: installation art, sculpture, video or new media, 2D visual art, and even live art.

The temporary locations range from indoor malls to locations viewable 24/7. Some get lots of foot traffic while others are more remotely located. Some are in developed areas while others are in developing ones. Some are under construction, some are not.

New properties are being added (and subtracted, when they lease) all the time. Currently, we are working primarily in Long Beach, Downtown Los Angeles and Pasadena, and Mircale Mile but will soon be announcing additional cities. Past cities and districts include Beverly Hills, Del Rey Arts District, and Silverlake.

How it works:

Every exhibit is site-specific and is a unique relationship between the Artist, Curator, Property Owner, and the Community the exhibit is in.

Here are some considerations: Every location is different and has a different set of guidelines. In most but not all cases you supply all the materials. We can supply some tools, such as hammers, and some consumables, such as nails, wire, tape, etc. You will want to be prepared to remove your piece within a reasonable amount of time should your space rent (evacuation notification varies from space to space). You must leave each location in the same or in better condition than you found it. Better condition is to be discussed before the installation begins. In general it means that Phantom Galleries LA or the property owner will not incur any additional costs to restore the location to an acceptable condition (to be defined by the Property Owner) as a result of the installation.

Application procedures:

  • For all artists: Please include contact information, a resume/bio, and a one-paragraph description of your proposed work, including whether or not it will be site-specific.
  • For installations: Please include diagrams and sufficient additional description.
  • For video work: Please include the title, credits, length, date, and format. For curatorial previewing, we want QuickTime data files on either CD or DVD (nonencoded).
  • For 2D visual work: Please include printed pictures or URLs where they can be found.
  • For live art: Please include the same as 2D visual work and video work (documentation of previous, not necessarily proposed, work), and a description, indicating length.

Acceptance:

Phantom Galleries LA is a privately owned business whose goal is to sustain itself. Many of our Locations are unfunded and or partially funded. Our organization currently relies on the generosity of its volunteers and participants. We do not rent or own the properties that we install exhibits in. We are guests of our generous hosts and benefactors the property owners. Our priority is not to cause injury or harm to the reputation of our generous hosts. We are respectful and grateful for this opportunity and do not engage in any activities that will place at risk or cause injury or harm to the reputation of our hosts. Protecting the property owner's interests and reputation are always our first priority. We are not a traditional gallery, or museum.

Each window installation is a site specific partnership between Artist, Curator, Property Owner, and PGLA . Every window is a one of a kind experience that requires all parties to communicate about what is appropriate and what is inappropriate content for each location and requires that everyone work together to create a rewarding experience for all. Each participating Arts Organization, Independent Curator, Artist is informed about what is and is not appropriate to show at each location. We do not censor or suppress any artists work but we do edit what can and can not be placed into each property based on the community that the property is located in. We are guests in someone else's home and we respect and appreciate the opportunity that we have been given and work within the limitations of that invitation.

If an artist work arrives and is in breach of what had been discussed and or agreed upon, verbally or in written form, than it is relocated to a more suitable location. If that can not be accomplished that the art is not included.

Work is placed in public pedestrian view. We can not knowingly choose work that will offend or intentionally provoke or incite numerous complaints. Clearly we would no longer be desirable guests if we were to do so and would be asked to leave. We are only able to offer Artist's opportunities if we have participating locations for their exhibits to be in. Throughout our History we have shown a wide variety of work. For a fairly comprehensive visual history please refer to our Flickr account.

  • We encourage the submission of installation art, sculpture (including experimental), performance art, new media, and paintings, from individuals, groups, and organizations.
  • When designing your installation, keep in mind that the public will only be able to see it from outside windows allocated to you.
  • Since the majority of the art will be visible from the sidewalk, it should adhere to the restrictions that apply to public art in terms of content.
